Emma recently visited S Walton Eyecare which has been part of the South Shields community for 90 years, operating from its base on Stanhope Road, to mark national Eye Health Week. Emma met with the current owner and optometrist Kaye Winship, and her team. Kaye explained that modern opticians’ practices play a key role in identifying early preventable sight loss and are contributing to the management of minor eye conditions, many people may not be aware that opticians can spot blood pressure problems, diabetes and brain tumours amongst other conditions.
It is expected that as continued pressure on GP and hospital services persists, the role for opticians will increase and prove to be a vital support in maintaining good health in our local communities. S Walton Eyecare has already developed and changed to meet the needs of local people including Chiropody services in their premises.
Emma said “It was great to meet Kaye and the team, I was really impressed by Kaye’s passion and enthusiasm for not only her role but our community. At a time when the Government are neglecting our NHS local opticians are likely to be relied upon more and more to identify health concerns, in Shields we are lucky to have Kaye and her dedicated team”.
