David Cameron failing ordinary families, says Emma

August 8, 2013

Emma Lewell-Buck 09 smallEmma has criticised David Cameron for failing struggling families, after new figures showed working people will be £6,600 worse off by 2015.

Once inflation has been taken into account, families in the North East are earning £23.10 less every week, or £1,200 a year. Living standards have fallen in 36 out of the 37 months David Cameron has been in Downing Street, by far the worst of any post-war Prime Minister. The average family’s earnings have now fallen to 2001 levels.

Emma said:

“No matter how much he claims ‘we’re all in this together’, David Cameron can’t fool ordinary people, who have now seen their wages fall in real terms for three years. People in the North East are over £1,200 a year worse off than they were when the Coalition came to power, and that’s before you include things like the skyrocketing cost of food.

“Economic growth is important, but it needs to benefit struggling families and not just those at the top. This Tory-led Government has cut taxes for millionaires while ordinary people’s incomes plummet, while unemployment in Shields has risen and pay for those in work is virtually static.

“We need a Labour Government to deliver a revitalised economy that works for everyone, not just a few.”
