Recently Emma went along to Arts 4 Wellbeing to officially announce to members that she would be taking part in the Great North Run in aid of the charity.
The charitable company which has operated since 1994 provides a place where people with mental health needs, physical disabilities and learning disabilities can go and take part in a range of art-based activities. The organisation gives individuals the opportunity to work with professional artists who encourage them to explore their artistic talent and create everything from paintings to digital imaging to pottery. Members also have the chance to work towards accredited art-based qualifications. The overall aim is to support members to re-establish self-confidence, increase self-esteem, and by group working in a creative environment to integrate and interact more fully with the wider community.
Emma will be taking part in the Great North Run with her husband Simon – it will be the first time the couple has run in the world’s biggest half-marathon. They chose the charity to benefit from their efforts because during recent visits, Emma has been impressed by the services it provides. Emma said, “I come from a social work background and know the value of the work the charity does. I know too that in the current economic climate, it is hard for our local charities, so I just wanted to do my bit for them. Arts 4 Wellbeing is a service I would love to see continue and thrive.”
Dave Woods, project manager at Arts 4 Wellbeing, said: “I think it’s absolutely fantastic that the MP has decided to run for the charity. The members who come here all think it’s brilliant.” Last week Emma got a vote of confidence from the members as they lined up to ‘wave her on her way’.
