Emma Lewell Buck Food Insecurity Bill

Food Insecurity Bill

July 17, 2018

Nobody should be going hungry in the UK.

But despite being one of the largest economies in the world, the shocking fact is that many people in this country simply cannot afford one of the most basic of needs – food. The reality is that thousands and potentially millions of people are going hungry in the UK – that’s men, women and heartbreakingly, children and babies. This is not acceptable.

A blackout on reporting these shocking figures means that this can and will continue to go on, without challenge.

In November 2017, Emma introduced a Bill that seeks to place a duty on the Secretary of State to routinely and robustly measure the level of food insecurity in the UK – something that is likely to have been exacerbated by the Tory Government and its relentless austerity purge.

Emma is determined that the Government must be held to account, and that relies on transparent reporting about household food security.  She is campaigning alongside End Hunger UK to ensure the Government understands the true scale of hidden hunger in the UK and to raise awareness of household food insecurity and its devastating impact on the lives of adults and children.

There are now over 150 cross-party MPs calling for more robust reporting. Emma is keeping the pressure on Government and encourages people to back her bill and take action. By contacting your local MP and asking them to support the bill to measure household food insecurity, you too can be a part of a passionate movement determined to end hunger in the UK.

It is only by properly measuring food insecurity that a light will shine on the shocking reality of life in the UK in 2018 for a great many people.
