June / July Casework Update

July 14, 2014

My monthly casework is continuing to rise and I have been able to resolve numerous complaints in my constituents’ favour. The most common difficulties facing constituents relate to benefits and housing problems. Further details of the most common cases can be found by clicking on the pie chart below.

Passport Delays

Several constituents have experienced serious delays with the Passport Office and I have raised their cases directly with HM Passport Office (HMPO). Following my intervention most people have been able to travel for their summer holidays or other reasons.

Fines for parents over school holiday absences

The number of cases of parents being fined for taking their children out of school for a holiday has risen dramatically. The Government introduced tougher regulations on term-time absence for holidays. The cost of a holiday is often lower during term time, with companies responding to higher demand by putting up prices, but head teachers are not able to grant any absence in term time except under “exceptional circumstances”.
