MPs back Emma’s World Social Work Day motion

April 12, 2014

Houses of ParliamentMPs from all major parties have backed Emma’s Early Day Motion (EDM) recognising the contribution of social workers.  Emma tabled the motion on 17 March to coincide with World Social Work Day 2014 on the 18th.

EDM 1193 (World Social Work Day 2014) states:

“That this House notes World Social Work Day on 18 March 2014; recognises social work as a global profession; and commends social workers across the UK for their dedication and hard work with some of the most vulnerable people in society.”

As of today (Wednesday 19 March) 20 MPs have signed up to the motion.  The list includes Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, SDLP, Alliance and Plaid Cymru MPs.

Emma tabled the motion as the recently elected Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Work, a cross-party group of MPs which examines issues around social work in the UK.

Emma said:

“I am pleased to see that the motion has support from MPs from across of the political spectrum.  Social workers do an essential job that protects some of the most vulnerable people in our community.  Unfortunately, their good work often goes unnoticed and they only make headlines when something goes wrong.  World Social Work Day is a great way of recognising social workers’ valuable contribution, and I am proud to have been able to sponsor this motion.”
