South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck visited Tyne Tunnel 2 this week as her programme of local visits continued.
Emma met with Rachel Turnbull, CEO of the project, to learn more about the tunnel’s construction and the impact it will have on easing congestion and reducing journey times in the area. At the moment the A19 is a particular concern, with severe delays near Testos and Silverlink Roundabout.
Infrastructure in the region received a big boost in June when council leaders agreed a £58.1m programme of investment, including £9.3m for a new South Shields transport hub.
Emma stated:
“As we all know the North East lags behind in the infrastructure stakes and this is something which has to change. I am committed to bringing development to the North East and want to work alongside my fellow North East MPs and Tyne Tunnel 2 to try and secure investment so that our area can have the road system which it truly needs and deserves.
“In the coming months I plan to do all I can to ensure that the highlighted problems of the A19 and A1 are addressed and a plan put in place so that we can move forward.”
