Emma spoke to a delegation of women from the construction union UCATT last week about overcoming the stereotypes which disadvantage women in certain careers.
Women are severely underrepresented in the construction industry, and Emma explained how women in politics also faced challenges. She explained how engaging with the political process and being part of a trade union could help women make their voices heard. Emma also argued that getting more working women into Parliament was an important step in unlocking opportunities for women in the workplace.
Other speakers included the Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Rachel Reeves MP and the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons Angela Eagle MP. The group also had the opportunity to meet the Labour Leader Ed Miliband.
The event was chaired by the Labour MP for Gateshead Ian Mearns.
Emma told the group about her own route into politics, saying that although she “was not born into the political class” she had not let anyone get between her and her dream of representing her community as South Shields’ first woman MP.
Speaking after the event, Emma said:
“I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to speak to these strong inspirational women today. Despite the progress we have made towards greater equality, it is still true that there are some careers where women are under-represented.
“Fortunately, thanks to Labour’s efforts that is becoming less true in politics. But there is still more work to be done, and we need to make sure that Parliament doesn’t just include women, but women from all walks of life.”
